Texas Family with Generations of Founding Texas History, Since 1731
Maternal Line: Spain
1731: 90 Years Before Stephen F Austin and 100 Years Before family cousin Sam Houston, Josh’s 8th Great Grandfather Texas Settler Juan Curbelo from Spain – Maternal Line – is listed 2nd of the first 16 families to start the first civil settlement in Texas the village of San Antonio Spanish Territory 1731. Juan Curbelo also served as the sixth and eighth mayor of San Antonio in 1737 and 1739. His family arrived in San Antonio from the Canary Islands in 1731 with 15 other Canarian families to populate the region. – Texas Historical marker.
Paternal Line: Scotts – Irish
James Walker Sr – Family member, one of the first American Settlers to own land in Texas, what is now Washington County Texas, in July 1824. With the first American Colony, the Stephen F. Austin Colony Land Grant, “Old 300”.
Jacob and Asa Walker – Two family members, Jacob Walker and Asa Walker who fought and died in the Battle of the Alamo March 6th, 1836. Jacob Walker, according to survivor Susanna Dickinson said to have been last defender to die in the Battle of the Alamo. Texas Historical Marker. Remember the Alamo.
James Walker Jr – Family member who fought in the Battle of San Jacinto April 21st, 1836, in the Texas War for Independence. Also built first brick home, about 1853, in rural part of McLennan County – Two Texas Historical markers.
Samuel Hamilton Walker Texas Ranger – Great Cousin The Original Walker Texas Ranger – Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. Co-Inventor, with Samuel Colt, of the Walker Colt Revolver 1847. The Walker Colt Revolver 1847 is the Official Gun of the State of Texas. Famous Battle of Walkers Creek vs Comanche named after him. Walker County Texas named after him. Texas Historical marker.
Cousin General Sam Houston – Great Cousin Sam Houston was a soldier and a statesman who played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution leading and winning the Battle of San Jacinto. With the City of Houston named after him and Walker Street downtown Houston named after the Walker family. Nancy Ann Houston is Josh’s 7th Great Grandmother. Josh and Sam Houston share the same Great Grandfather John Samuel Houston. The Walker’s and the Houston’s have been together as allied families as far back as the 1500’s in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and into Texas.
Ewell Doak Walker II – Great Cousin Doak Walker was an American football player who was a halfback and kicker. He played college football for the SMU Mustangs, winning the Maxwell Award in 1947 and the Heisman Trophy in 1948. He then played professionally for the Detroit Lions and the NFL from 1950 to 1955. Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959. Walker was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986. The Doak Walker Award is awarded annually since 1990 to the top running back in college football, named after him.
